Alfred Bendiner (1899 – 1964)
A charming sketch of a waiter, a tray of drinks confidently balanced high above his head. The sketch is drawn upon a menu from the famed Brasserie Lipp restaurant in the 6th arrondisement of Paris. The cafe has played an important role in literary and cultural history with many famous people frequenting it throughout history including Paul Verlaine and Marcel Proust. Ernest Hemingway extolled the brasserie’s culinary virtues in his book, "A Moveable Feast", and on Liberation Day in Paris, 1944, he was the first patron to walk through the door and order a drink.
Alfred Bendiner was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1899. He Attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning his Bachelor of Arts in architecture in 1922 and his masters in 1927. He also studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts, the American Academy in Rome, and under Paul Cret.
Bendiner owned an architectural firm in Philadelphia and was a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He later lead the Philadelphia chapter as president. In 1937, Bendiner served as artist for the University of Pennsylvania Museum's archaeological expedition to Tepegawra and Khafaji in Iraq. He was the architect to the University's Tikal archaeological expedition to Guatemala in 1960. His sketches were published in the fall of 1960 in the University Museum bulletin.
Bendiner's lithographs are in major print collections in the United States and Europe, including such respected institutions as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy and Cabinet des Estampes of the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris. Six murals have been executed by him in this country, half of which deal with historical locales in Philadelphia. During the 1930s, Bendiner worked as a caricaturist for the Philadelphia Bulletin, the Philadelphia Record, and the Washington Times Herald. The Graphics art department of Princeton University has a large collection of Bendiner’s cartoons which he drew on maps, menus, etc. during the course of his travels.
