Russell Sherman (American, b. 1907)
Russell Sherman’s art was a product and reflection of the Depression and New Deal art policies. He was born in Iowa, the son of a wheat grower and cattleman. He later moved with his family to Nebraska where he continued to observe the wide open scenery of the American West and to depict it in his work. He studied at the Art Institute in Kansas City. Sherman was commissioned to create murals for federal buildings. Two of the best know of these are in Colorado; one in Estes Park in the Rocky Mountains National Park and another in the post office in Loveland. He favored strong contrasts in his painting which is evident in this winter scene.
