A finely detailed elevated wood engraved view of the seat of the American government drawn by Theodore R. Davis based upon the photographs of W.H. Jackson. A key below identifies 25 monuments, including the Capitol, the Botanical Gardens, the Columbian Armory, the National Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the Agricultural Department, the Washington Monument, the State, War and Navy Departments, the White House, the Treasury Department, the Army Medical and Surgical Museum (Ford’s Theatre, where President Lincoln was shot). The Young Men’s Christian Association, the general Post-Office, Patent-Office, Centre Market, the Baltimore and Potomac Depot (where President Garfield was shot), City Hall, the Baltimore and Ohio Depot, the Government Printing Office, Mount Vernon Square, Franklin Square, the Orphan Asylum, Howard University, Columbian College and the Soldiers’ Home.
