Plate 23 Two Soldiers

Salvatore Rosa (1615 - 1673) was an Italian Baroque painter, poet and printmaker, active in Naples, Rome and Florence. At a young age he showed a preference for the arts and taught himself to paint. He lived both in Rome and Naples, where he painted haunting landscapes, overgrown with vegetation, or jagged beaches, mountains, and caves. These early landscapes were sold cheaply through private dealers. His painting evolved to Greek and Roman historical scenes and allegories. He was a significant etcher, with a highly popular and influential series of small prints of soldiers, from which this engraving comes.
