"Wire Bridge at Fairmount"
The grand opening of the Wire Bridge was celebrated on January 1, 1842. It was the first two lane highway river crossing in North America. The bridge was designed by Charles Ellet, Jr. and was the first suspension bridge of its kind in the country. The 358 foot long bridge was supported by 5 wire cables on each side. It was removed in 1875. This wood engraving was included in William Cullen Bryant's Picturesque America... 12 ¾ x 17 inches, overall. Framed to museum specifications. Hand colored wood engraving.
