A wood engraved view of the first wire suspension bridge in the United States "Wire Bridge at Fairmount"

The grand opening of the Wire Bridge was celebrated on January 1, 1842. It was the first two lane highway river crossing in North America. The bridge was designed by Charles Ellet, Jr. and was the first suspension bridge of its kind in the country. The 358 foot long bridge was supported by 5 wire cables on each side.
