"The Mountains of Samayut"
This extraordinary large hand-colored aquatinted engraving demonstrates the very best of the late 18th / early 19th century British engravers oeuvre. The image was included in Henry Salt's highly valued book entitled, Twenty Four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, and Abyssinia. The book was published by William Miller of London, in May of 1808 and the plate was engraved by D. Havell. These views of the exotic locales were terribly popular although one had to have deep pockets, even then, to acquire a volume. Henry Salt was emplyed as a draughtsman and secretary to accompany George Viscount Valentia on his 1805 tour of the East. Upon their return the drawings were translated into extraordinarily large beautiful engravings.
22 x 30 1/4 inches sheet Aquatint engraving with original hand-color. Clean and sharp impression with good margins (some soiling to outside margins) otherwise excellent condition. |
